Daimler-Benz made only two road-legal 300 SLR coupés, known as Uhlenhaut Coupés. One of these two cars served as the personal car of its designer, Daimler-Benz motorsport chief Rudolf Uhlenhaut.

When Mercedes-Benz cancelled its racing programme after the Le Mans disaster, the hybrid project was shelved. The infamous doors hinged on the roof, are a tribute to the stiffness of the frame and not an esthetical marketing gag. The first versions of the doors on the W194 however were rather a glass access hatch than a real door as only the windows would open. For the 24 hours of Le Mans 1952, these hatches were extended further down to comply with the rules of the ACO and finally found their way into the production car, the W198. The weight distribution throughout the vehicle was a perfect 50:50. To achieve this, the battery, for example, is bolted onto the frame behind the driver’s seat

It was actually the Mercedes-Benz W194, also known as the 300 SL racing car, which was produced by Mercedes-Benz for the 1952 Sportscar racing season.

The W194 was powered by a 3.0-liter SOHC straight-6 M194 engine and was built around a mere 140–150-pound welded aluminum tube spaceframe chassis to offset the relatively underpowered M194 engine. The W194 was succeeded by the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR in 1955

In 1952, Mercedes sent a three-car team of 300SL to Mexico to the Carrera Panamericana. Team driver Karl Kling won the race, followed by fellow Mercedes driver Hermann Lang.
