It will be interesting to return to my slide rule…but I think i will not like it ! 😜

Your life without a computer: what does it look like?

I think i will not like it ! 😜

Since I bought my very first electronic calculator I have been hooked to technology

Hewlett-Packard HP 45

I started my engineering studies at the Facultad de Quimica in the Mexican University in 1972 UNAM

UNAM FACULTAD DE QUIMICA MEXICO

The HP-45 was the second scientific pocket calculator introduced by Hewlett-Packard, adding to the features of the HP-35. It was introduced in 1973 with an MSRP of US$395 (equivalent to $2,604 in 2022).

We used to make our calculations on a beautiful analog logarithmic device the Slide Rule

Faber-Castell Novo-Duplex 2/83N Slide Rule

We actually had a course on how to use them and they were amazing devices.

The Slide rule principle

A slide rule is a mechanical analog calculator that uses logarithmic scales to perform mathematical operations. It consists of two main parts: a fixed scale and a sliding scale. The fixed scale is typically marked with a logarithmic scale of numbers, while the sliding scale is marked with the same logarithmic scale, but displaced by a certain amount.

To perform a calculation, the user aligns the two scales at the desired values. The result of the calculation can then be read off the scale at the cursor line. For example, to multiply two numbers, the user aligns the two scales at the two numbers. The product of the two numbers can then be read off the scale at the cursor line.

The Faber-Castell Novo-Duplex 2/83N Slide Rule

The Faber-Castell Novo-Duplex 2/83N Slide Rule was a high-quality slide rule that was manufactured by Faber-Castell in Germany from the 1950s to the 1970s. It was a double-sided slide rule, with a different set of scales on each side.

The front side of the slide rule has scales for performing basic arithmetic operations, such as multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.

The back side of the slide rule has scales for performing more advanced operations, such as trigonometry, logarithms, and exponentiation.

The Faber-Castell Novo-Duplex 2/83N Slide Rule was a well-made and accurate instrument. It was widely used by engineers, scientists, and students before the advent of electronic calculators.

Brief history of the slide rule

The slide rule was invented in the early 17th century by Edmund Gunter, an English mathematician. Gunter’s slide rule was a simple instrument that consisted of two logarithmic scales on a single strip of wood. Over the next few centuries, the slide rule evolved into a more complex instrument, with multiple scales and features.

The first slide rules were made of wood. In the late 19th century, metal slide rules became more common. Metal slide rules were more durable and accurate than wooden slide rules.

Slide rules were widely used until the advent of electronic calculators in the 1970s. Electronic calculators were more convenient and accurate than slide rules, and they quickly replaced slide rules in most applications. Today, slide rules are primarily used by collectors and enthusiasts.

When I was at the University, I happened to see a professor walking on the street with an amazing device (seemed to me so intriguing because he walked like people do now with their cell phones 😂) I approached him and asked about the device and he kindly and excited, showed to me how it worked, it was the very first scientific calculator the HP 35

!I was amazed, in that moment i knew I had to have one!

At the time, slide rules were the only practical portable devices for performing trigonometric and exponential functions, as existing pocket calculators could only perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Introduced at US$395 (equivalent to $2,800 in 2022),[2] like HP’s first scientific calculator, the desktop 9100A, it used reverse Polish notation (RPN) rather than what came to be called “algebraic” entry. The “35” in the calculator’s name came from the number of keys.

The original HP-35 was available from 1972 to 1975. In 2007 HP announced the release of the “retro”-look HP 35s to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the launch of the original HP-35. It was priced at US$59.99.[3]

The HP-35 was named an IEEE Milestonein 2009.[4]

At that time I had worked for the previous year to my entrance to college to buy a car, it was a beautiful french little car the Renault 8 that everyone called “Le Monsieur”

¡I sold it!

And flew to the University of Chicago to buy my calculator, the cost of the car at that time was $1,760 And I bought 3 Calculators, One for my girlfriend of that time, one for me, and another for a raffle to recover my investment and buy another car 😜

Everything worked as planned it was a perfect time, the plane was a McDonnell Douglas DC-10 an American trijet wide-body aircraft manufactured by McDonnell Douglas. It was introduced on August 5, 1971, by American Airlines. And I remember the double deck with a bar 😎 and everybody in formal suits and perfectly attired (Ohh my those were beautiful days and memories)

McDonnell Douglas DC-10

After my return I started my career in marketing and advertising 😂 ¡My campaign was very successful and I was able to sell all the tickets for the raffle ! ¡I finished my first statistic exam in two minutes to the surprise of my fellow mates and professor and the world changed

¡And bought my new innovative french car!

My 1974 Renault 12

But French design was not on vogue among my mates and from the proud “Le Monsieur” they mocked and nicknamed my new car as “Grandma duck”

The car was lovely and gave us great adventures to the jungles of Agua Azul

The Agua Azul Waterfalls in Chiapas, Mexico
When I saw this IN PERSON
I regained my believe in GOD

On that adventurous Tour with “Grandma Duck@ we also went to ancient sites of Palenque

The Maya Site of Palenque

And an amazing trip all the way to Bacalar Lagoon

The Bacalar Lagoon System

The re-discovered and restored town of Tulum

The Maya Fortress of Tulum

We almost lost our lives in hands of some Korean War ex-combatants that lived isolated in those beaches, but that will be another story. 😎

Before arriving to the the new territory and city beach of Cancun that was going to be launched we had beautiful 😱 encounters with Barracudas at the natural aquarium of Xel-Ha

Cancún was a small fishing village on the Yucatán Peninsula until the 1970s, when the Mexican government decided to develop it into a major tourist destination. The Cancún Project, as it was known, began in 1970 and was completed in 1974.

¡When we arrived there the place was almost virgin!

Historic Cancun in 1974

The project involved the construction of a new infrastructure, including a road, airport, hotels, and other tourist facilities. The Mexican government also worked to promote Cancún to tourists from around the world.

The Cancún Project was a success, and Cancún quickly became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico. Today, Cancún is a major international resort city with millions of visitors each year.

Here is a very brief summary of the development of Cancún:

  • 1970: Cancún Project begins
  • 1974: Cancún Project completed
  • 1975: Cancún International Airport opens
  • 1980: Cancún has over 100 hotels
  • 1990: Cancún has over 200 hotels
  • 2000: Cancún has over 300 hotels
  • 2010: Cancún has over 400 hotels
  • 2020: Cancún has over 500 hotels

Cancún is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, known for its beautiful beaches, clear blue waters, and vibrant nightlife.

So the question of the prompt?

Your life without a computer: what does it look like?

I would not like it! the journey with technology has been a blast, we have arrived to the moon and the future will be amazing

Failure is not an option

You will never forget a person who came to you with a torch in the dark …
